Movie Night Birthday Party: Act 4

I hope you have enjoyed my posts about Anna's Fifth Birthday Party. We used evites for the invites; created supercute lion masks and glitter tattoos; and then we sat in cars that were made out of boxes. If you missed it, you can find the posts here, here and here respectively. Today I want to share the cupcakes that Sarah and I made for the party. In keeping with the movie theme, I thought it would be cute to make cupcakes that look like tiny tubs of popcorn. I think they turned out to be amazing! (Sorry for the blurry pictures.)

To make these we made our favorite vanilla cupcakes with butter cream icing (Anna's Favorite). While the cupcakes were baking, Sarah and I cut mini-marshmallows into popcorn shapes. Basically we randomly cut them so each looked a little different, just like popcorn.

Sarah used a large star tip and swirl icing technique and iced each cupcake. Then we placed each "popcorn kernel" on top of the icing. We watered down yellow food dye and used a kitchen brush to paint on the tops of the kernels to give the cakes the buttered-popcorn look.

I am not going to lie. These cupcakes were a big hit! Also, just as a note: if you have any vegetarian friends, marshmallows are not vegetarian. You can either leave some without marshmallows or buy vegetarian marshmallows.
